R L Foote Design Studio has a State of the Art Glaze Lab, where we are constantly testing new and innovative glazes, clays and material finishes.
we have a wide range of glazes and the ability to test and refine custom glazes to match existing or historic glazes.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new internship program focused on ceramic glazes. This unique opportunity will entail one or two days of participation per week over a span of two months, allowing interns to collaborate with the studio team and Ryan Foote himself. Together, participants will delve into the scientific intricacies of glazes while actively engaging in the development, refinement, and testing of new formulations. This program is ideally suited for both ceramic artists or individuals working studying chemistry or materials sciences.
The primary aim of this internship is to explore innovative glazes and ceramic finishes, equipping interns with the knowledge and skills to integrate these advancements into their own studio practices or scientific research endeavors. By fostering collaboration and hands-on experience within a studio environment, we seek to expand glaze knowledge, develop novel applications, and nurture a community of creative and scientific inquiry.
We are seeking passionate individuals eager to expand their understanding of glaze chemistry and leverage the exceptional resources available at R L Foote Design Studio. Prospective interns should demonstrate a blend of creativity and scientific curiosity, along with:
Fundamental knowledge in ceramics, chemistry, or materials science
A fervent interest in glaze development
Strong attention to detail
Availability to work one or two days per week within the studio (Monday to Saturday, as per personal preference)
The program will span two months, with interns committing to one day per week. Those wishing to dedicate additional time for experimentation are encouraged to do so, and scheduling flexibility will be accommodated. During the initial week, interns will spend two days alongside Ryan and fellow interns, delving into glaze basics, clay fundamentals, studio methodologies, and the documentation of samples. Practical sessions will include instruction on creating test strips.
Subsequent weeks will involve tasks such as mixing glazes, applying formulations, documenting firing results, and discussing findings. Iterative refinement cycles will be employed until desired outcomes or stable glazes are achieved.
Interested applicants are invited to complete the form below, providing background information, insights into how this internship aligns with their creative or professional aspirations, preferred workdays, and any specific interests in exploring particular glazes or materials, along with reasons for such preferences.
At the culmination of the internship program, a closing session will be held to celebrate interns' accomplishments and present certificates or letters of recommendation. We encourage ongoing engagement with the studio and consideration of future collaboration or employment opportunities.
By refining language, clarifying instructions, and enhancing readability, the internship program documentation aims to effectively communicate its objectives, structure, and expectations to potential applicants.
